NBC’s Kenan has been canceled after two seasons on NBC. Variety reports that the comedy vehicle starring Kenan Thompson isn’t coming back for a third season.
Kenan is produced by Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live, which Tompson also stars in and follows the life of single dad Kenan Williams. The show follows the titular character as he balances family, hosting a popular Atlanta morning TV show, and the loss of his wife. The show also stars Dani Lane and Dannah Lane as his daughters, SNL’s Chris Redd as his brother and Don Johnson as his live-in father-in-law.
Kenan also stars Kimrie Lewis and Taylor Louderman and is created by Jackie Clarke and David Caspe. Executive producers of the show include Michaels, Thompson, Andrew Singer, Caspe, Kenny Smith Jr., Lisa Muse Bryant and Bryan Tucke.
The show’s second season averaged a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen’s “most current” ratings. The show tied with Mr. Mayor for the fourth lowest-rated series on all of broadcast. NBC has similarly announced the cancelation of Mr. Mayor and NBC drama, The Endgame.
NBC’s upfronts presentation in New York is scheduled for May 16. The network plans to unveil the 2022-2023 slate at the event. While the full slate is not known, NBC has announced the renewing of their comedies Grand Crew, American Auto and Young Rock. They have also announced new seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, New Amsterdam, LaBrea, Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: SVU previously. The network also will debut new shows, Quantum Leap, Nightcourt and Lopez vs. Lopez.
