In ‘Woori The Virgin’ A One-In-A-Million Pregnancy Delivers True Love

Raised by a single mom, who is vulnerable to romantic scams, Woori is determined to maintain her virginity until she reaches the safe haven of marriage. As well as protecting her virginity she’s also careful not to completely give her heart away. The lovably sweet Woori wins the devotion of a man willing to wait, a man she can keep at a safe distance. Their two-year relationship is celibate.

Things go terribly awry when a visit to the OB/GYN ends up with Woori getting accidentally artificially inseminated. The sperm belongs to the man who is not-too-coincidentally-for-a-k-drama the only man Woori ever even kissed. He has clearly forgotten who she is. This mixup happens just as her long-standing staunchly Catholic boyfriend is ready to culminate their chaste relationship with a proposal. When he finds out she is pregnant, he immediately assumes she will end the pregnancy.

Woori, played as a wide-eyed naif by Lim Soo-hyang, achieved her life’s dream of becoming a drama writer. She proposes her situation as a plot point for the drama she is currently writing. It’s a plot not too crazily endearing for a k-drama, but the story is actually adapted from the US TV show Jane The Virgin, which in turn was adapted from the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen. The US version ran for five seasons. The SBS k-drama version is likely to focus only on the improbable romance between sperm donor and recipient, ending in one season, but supplying plenty of fun side characters to provide amusing k-drama plot twists.

Raphael, the original object of Woori’s affections, is played by Sung Joon, who was last seen in Love ft. Marriage and Divorce and So I Married An Anti-Fan. He plays an initially coldhearted CEO whose victory over cancer forces him to reassess what really matters. Woori’s fiance is played by Shin Dong-wook, who recently appeared in the dramas Reflection of You and Now We Are Breaking Up. Lim was last seen in When I Was Most Beautiful and Graceful Family.

Torn by conflicting emotions, Woori winds up lending her body for what will technically be a virgin birth. She might be slower to give up her heart. Babies do have the potential to change their parents’ lives and in this case her baby may help unite her with the man she was meant to love.
