According to China’s National Health Commission, 19 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Beijing on Monday, five of which are asymptomatic.
A majority of the cases in the capital have been detected in its largest district, Chaoyang—which houses 3.45 million residents and is also home to several embassies and foreign businesses.
The city has reported 47 new Covid infections since Saturday—both symptomatic and asymptomatic—prompting targeted lockdowns of specific apartment buildings in the city.
Schools in the city continue to remain open but officials have ordered a ban on all group activities and gatherings, including training programs, arts and sports, CNBC reported.
The rise in cases comes as China is in the midst of its worst Covid-19 outbreak since the start of the pandemic—which has already led to record cases and a nearly month-long lockdown in its financial hub of Shanghai.
