In a recent case, crypto got some plus points as a New York State Supreme Court judge in Yates County ruled on the side of cryptocurrency mining firm Greenidge Generation. And he dismissed the petition filed by a coalition of environmental activists.
A recent press release by the crypto mining firm highlighted that the judge Daniel Doyle dismissed a petition against the Greenidge Generation Holdings put forward by a bunch of environmental organizations. The Sierra Club comprising Seneca Lake Guardian and the Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes along with a number of individuals sought to make an effort to shut down the mining operation at Seneca Lake.
Furthermore, the petition also demanded to stop Greenidge Generation from expanding its Bitcoin mining operation at a facility in a 300-people town in Yates County, Dresden.
The mining firm is willing to increase its abilities at the gas-powered plant from 17,000 miners in service to 49,000 by the end of 2022.
No Petitioner Lives Closer Than 2,000 Feet From The Project Site
According to a quote from the ruling, the petitioners have failed to prove that they would suffer an environmental injury different from that suffered by the general public.
Furthermore, the judge highlighted that among the petitioners, none of them lives close than 2,000 feet to the mining site and that the local planning board has examined and analyzed the possible impacts of the project on the environment.
The decision marks the fifth unsuccessful attempt of legal action against the project’s expansion by several entities, specifies the release by the company.
Greenidge Generation Holdings is a crypto data center and a power generation company. Which it claims is committed to 100% carbon-neutral operations at all its locations. And that it utilizes low carbon energy sources and balances its carbon footprint.
Crypto cases that reach the law are still new for the judges and decision-makers. Folks still need to wait till they can openly utilize the use cases to prove their point. And this case where the law was in favor of mining might prove to be a precedent for the crypto industry.
