A Pentagon official told reporters Wednesday all Russian troops had left the areas of Kyiv and Chernihiv to regroup and resupply in Belarus and Russia — now Ukrainian locals are mourning lost relatives and attempting to pick up the pieces.
Key Facts
The Pentagon is “assessing that all of the Russians have left” Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv, a senior U.S. defense official told reporters Wednesday, according to the Washington Post.
The official warned, however, that Kyiv was not “immune from further attack” as troops moved to Belarus to regroup, the Washington Post reported.
A National Public Radio reporter on the ground in Kyiv said Wednesday the city was “starting to slowly return,” though sandbags and concrete barricades remained in the streets.
The senior defense official’s remarks come days after reports emerged that Ukrainian officials had discovered the bodies of 410 civilians in Bucha, a suburb outside Kyiv, after Russian soldiers started to withdraw.
