Call Of NFT: Activision Considering NFT Inclusion

According to an industry insider, upcoming Call of Duty (CoD) games could incorporate NFT in their gameplay.

‘Insider’ Talks About CoD NFTs

Videogames are at the forefront of the NFT-supported Metaverse development plans for Web 3.0. The creator of the popular Call of Duty (CoD) videogames, Activision Blizzard, is reportedly looking into incorporating NFT elements in all future CoD games. The news was broken by a supposed industry insider, who goes by the pseudonym ‘RalphsValve’ on Twitter and has leaked CoD-related intel in recent months.

They tweeted,

“With the Overhaul in Call of Duty’s UX/UI, Infinity Ward plans to personalize ACTV Accounts: incorporating: Global Calling Cards & Emblems, Avatars and, Statistics. NFT Inclusion is reportedly being considered by Activision.”

Plans Not Confirmed; Could Be Shelved

Activision has not made any comment or announcement revealing any plans for NFT inclusion. However, speculations are rife about the nature of the NFTs. Community members are musing over the nature of the NFTs, with weapon skins and calling cards being the most likely modes of incorporating these assets.

RalphsValve followed up his announcement with another tweet, which also presents the possibility of the project being shelved due to uncertainty around NFTs.

They tweeted,

“NFTs have been under review, and in consideration, for a few months. With EA’s immediate backlash against NFTs, It can totally fall through. MTX and Content structures are influenced by trends and predictions, NFTs just seem to be that at the moment.”

Microsoft’s Metaverse Dreams

Activision has been in the news recently as it was acquired by Microsoft in January 2022. The $69 billion all-cash-deal, touted as the biggest deal in gaming history, saw Microsoft enter the videogame space and establish its first move in the Metaverse.

CEO Satya Nadella had said,

“Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms.”

Microsoft is determined to make significant moves in the Metaverse by acquiring Activision. The reports about the NFTs in the upcoming CoD games certainly align with the expectations of Microsoft channeling its Metaverse dreams through Activision’s 390 million monthly users and pre-established gaming franchises of Call of Duty and Warcraft. Microsoft has also revealed plans to update its Xbox gaming console to improve the Metaverse experience, indicating that the inclusion of NFTs in Activision’s CoD could be a possible reality.
