Italian auto brand Alfa Romeo is bringing NFTs, which recently has gained popularity in digital art, to its new Tonale SUV.
Why NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital assets that cannot be replaced. They are validated and stored using blockchain technology, making it difficult or impossible to alter, hack, or defraud the system.
NFTs have grown popular with digital artwork, but they may also be used for music, website domains, and now automobiles.
Tonale first car to keep a blockchain
Tonale will be the first vehicle to use a non-fungible blockchain token technology.
Alfa Romeo, which is owned by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler), claims that the Tonale NFT, which it claims is an industry first, certifies the automobile at the time of purchase and then effectively records and keeps data throughout the car’s life cycle.
“Digitalization will pave our path of transformation.” He added, “NFTs are based on the same distributed information logic that safeguards your Bitcoin,” stated Francesco Calcara, head of Alfa marketing and publicity, during a press conference. “It will keep all data on the blockchain during the car’s lifecycle.”
According to Alfa Romeo, the NFT will capture vehicle data, providing a certificate that can be used to ensure the car has been properly maintained, potentially increasing its residual value. To record the data, the automobile must be serviced by a licensed Alfa Romeo dealer.
Dominique stated that the company has been focused on stabilizing Alfa Romeo and its next pivot to electrification after the combination of Fiat Chrysler with French automaker PSA Groupe in January 2021 to form Stellantis.
Availability of Tonale
The vehicle shares several design elements with current Alfa Romeo models. It’s primarily based on a concept vehicle of the same name that the company unveiled in 2019.
The Tonale will be available in the United States with a base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
There will also be a plug-in hybrid electric variant with a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower and an electric range of more than 30 miles.
The Tonale will be available in the first quarter of 2023, according to Alfa Romeo, with orders opening in the fourth quarter. Pricing was not disclosed by the company.
