Virtual reality has come a long way in the past decade or so, but the last few years have represented a key inflection point for the technology. Gone are the days of bulky headsets that are wired to massive gaming setups – only for the lag to leave you feeling nauseous in no time. Modern headsets continue to get cheaper, better, and more widely accessible as time goes on.
This makes it a very exciting time to be developing a metaverse game. Our creation, Kusunoki Samurai, is a VR game that aims to fully immerse yourself in the world of the 14th-century. Following the journey of famed samurai Kusunoki Masashige, you can experience the vivid details of what it was like to fight in ancient Japan. And it’s only been possible to realize this vision thanks to the incredible developments we’ve seen in virtual reality.
What We’re Trying to Achieve with Kusunoki Samurai
The goal for the game is that when you put on your headset, you feel like you are pulling on the helmet of the samurai. Our designers have been hard at work to ensure that every time you do so, you feel the hairs on the back of your arms stand up. The idea is that you are transported immediately into an entirely new world, allowing you to escape from your current reality and experience something that you never thought you would have been able to.
This is the promise of virtual reality and the metaverse more generally. Some have termed it an empathy machine because of its ability to place you viscerally into the shoes of somebody else and have you experience their life in all its vivid detail. It’s through these experiences that we can take storytelling to the next level and craft experiences that will stay with players for a long time to come.
If we can make you feel like the samurai and engender the same emotional resonance that they must have dealt with, then we will have done our job.
How Full Immersion Will Change the Nature of Gaming
As we’ve been working through this project, we’ve thought a lot about how the full immersion enabled by augmented reality and virtual reality will shape the games of the future. We seem to find ourselves at a transition point right now where we are moving from 2D gaming to a VR-first world where you can truly inhabit the minds of the characters you are playing with.
The augmentations of the haptic industry, enhanced sound design, and breakthroughs in AI-supported rendering will make for games that are as close to photo-realistic depictions of real-life as you can get. This will start interesting debates about people losing themselves in virtual worlds, but most of the fearmongering around this outcome is overblown. The truth is that fully immersive games will offer a level of enjoyment that will quickly outstrip what is possible on a flat-screen.
We are incredibly excited to be a part of this transition and we can’t wait to see where the industry goes from here.
