Indiana vs. Wyoming March Madness Preview And Prediction

While this First Four game involves a pair of programs that were on the bubble and narrowly slipped into the Big Dance, both have a real chance to make some noise as a Cinderella squad.

Since the addition of these play-in games in 2011, nine teams involved in them have gone on to win multiple games in the NCAA Tournament.

VCU showed the value of getting off to a hot start in the inaugural event, making a run all the way to the Final Four. UCLA accomplished the same feat last year, beginning a Final Four journey as a First Four underdog against Michigan State and remaining unblemished up until an overtime loss to Gonzaga in the semifinals.

The Hoosiers and Cowboys both have potential to advance past the first weekend of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

According to FanDuel’s March Madness odds, Indiana is +4500 to reach the Final Four. The Hoosiers have better odds of pulling that off that many teams already on the 64-team bracket with better seeding, including the likes of Michigan State (+4800), Marquette (+6500) and Iowa State (+6500).

Even Wyoming—an underdog in tonight’s contest—has +18000 odds of making it through the East, giving the squad better Final Four odds than 16 other teams in the field.

The Hoosiers are fortunate to be in this position, as their season was nearly derailed between February 5 and March 5, a disappointing span that saw the team lose seven of nine contests.

Indiana rallied in the Big Ten tournament, however, toppling a pair of favored foes in Michigan and Illinois before falling short on a late three-pointer in the semifinals against eventual champion Iowa.

Those “W”’s over the Wolverines and Fighting Illini couldn’t have come at a better time, as it gave the Hoosiers just enough clout with the committee to earn one of the last four spots in the March Madness field.

Indiana will have the best player on the floor tonight in forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. The junior averaged 18.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks this year and put up 31 points and 10 boards against the Hawkeyes. Jackson-Davis’ prowess on both sides of the ball will surely give the Cowboys fits but slowing him down must be a priority and will be key in their upset bid.

Wyoming boasts a similarly talented forward in Graham Ike, one of the top players in the Mountain West conference. The sophomore has excellent size at 6’9”, 252 pounds, a build that augmented his talent and allowed him to nearly average a double-double during the 2021-22 season (19.6 points and 9.6 rebounds).

Ike’s partnership with senior guard Hunter Maldonado, one of the better set-up artists in college basketball right now (6.3 assists per game), will make things difficult on the Hoosiers’ defense.

Still, the Hoosiers are favored for a reason. They have more talent in their rotation and have excelled in tournament-type situations already this season. Indiana has gone 3-1 straight-up and a perfect 4-0 ATS at neutral sites, faring far better than Wyoming—which was 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS on a neutral floor—during the campaign.

Expect Indiana to eventually pull away late, outworking and outperforming the Cowboys down the stretch to punch their ticket to the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

Pick: Indiana -4
