Jaime Camil, known in the U.S. for his role as the over-the-top Rogelio de la Vega in Jane The Virgin and internationally as the leading man in telenovelas such as La Fea Más Bella and Por Ella Soy Eva, has signed an exclusive first-look deal with Viacom International Studios (VIS) to develop projects for Paramount+.
Under the terms of the deal, he will create, develop, and produce Spanish-language and majority Spanish-language scripted and non-scripted content for the streaming service.
“With Jaime’s experience and creative focus we are confident that he’ll bring the best Spanish-language content to Paramount+ that resonates with our audiences around the world,” said JC Acosta, President of International Studios & Networks Southern Europe, Latin America, Middle East & Africa.
Camil is mostly known as an actor. He has had a prolific television and film career in his native Mexico, but has also found crossover success in Hollywood. In addition to Jane the Virgin, he had a starring role in the short-lived CBS comedy Broke. Most recently, he’s featured on Apple TV’s Schmigadoon! and the film Kimi. He has also done extensive voice over work for animated films, including Coco and The Secret Life of Pets.
This deal taps into Camil’s interest behind the camera. He had his first executive producer credit in the Lionsgate/Pantelion Films romantic comedy Las Píldoras de mi Novio (My Boyfriend’s Meds), which also marked his first crossover lead. During an interview about the movie, he shared how much he enjoys being part of the creative process.
“I’m always very involved when it comes to producing projects,” Camil shared at the time. “I love that part of the business – being behind the camera.”
With regards to the VIS/Paramount+ deal, in a statement, said: “Storytelling generates empathy and it imparts wisdom through characters in place of lived experience. Additionally, through the prism of art, story allows us to contextualize and also see a deeper beauty within our own lives. I look forward to developing and producing meaningful stories with the amazing team at Paramount. I can’t wait to show the world what we have in store.”
But that doesn’t mean he’ll stop acting. Camil is currently filming the biopic of internationally-renowned Mexican singer and actor Vicente Fernandez, who died in December 2021.
