Eddie Kingston def. Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho received a massive pop for his entrance to kick off AEW Revolution 2022. Believe it or not, Kingston’s was even louder.
Chris Jericho was roundly booed throughout this match, flipped off the crowd in response, intimidated Aubrey Edwards and even undid a turnbuckle. Judas theme, or no Judas theme, the man is already a heel. Chris Jericho’s antics turn had all the makings of a heel turn except for the term “attitude change” from the broadcast team.
Eddie Kingston’s (exposed) belly seemed to get even bigger since his feud with CM Punk, but that’ll only make him more of an everyman.
The crowd eventually became split in the second half of this match.
Jurassic Express vs. reDRagon and The Young Bucks—AEW Tag Team Championships
Much like his antics during a recent Adam Cole promo, Bobby Fish was heckling from the apron throughout this match.
The story of this match as The Young Bucks teaming up with reDRagon until their agreement fell apart.
AEW needs to get over its fear of big men and push Luchasaurus already. This man is incredible.
Jungle Boy broke out in a big way in this match. It was a star-making performance for the Jurassic Express.
Forget match of the night, this might be an early contender for match of the year. The scary part is, this wasn’t even The Young Bucks’ best match.
Wardlow wins AEW Face of the Revolution Ladder Match
Keith Lee, Powerhouse Hobbs and Wardlow teased a hoss fight until Orange Cassidy entered the fray with his signature leg kicks.
Keith Lee got a much bigger pop than Orange Cassidy, and the biggest pop of any entrance.
Fans chanted “Wardlow” similar to “Goldberg” as he climbed the ladder. He continued to climb despite having both Ricky Starks and Orange Cassidy on his back.
Keith Lee did a callback from his famous “stalker” spot on Adam Cole. This time, Christian was the victim.
Poor Orange Cassidy overshot the wrestlers on the outside and landed on the floor as an immensely strong Keith Lee gave him a beal.
AEW Signs Shane “Swerve” Strickland
AEW is the best in the business when it comes to debuts, and the most frustrating when it comes to follow-up. The reaction told me Swerve Strickland will be a major star. History tells me Swerve will be hidden on AEW Dark within a month. I hope history is wrong.
Jade Cargill def. Tay Conti—AEW TBS Championship
Jade Cargill was played out by Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, who delivered an incredible live rendition of the guitar solo in Cargill’s theme.
Jade Cargill opened this match by kissing Conti on the lips. Mind games, I guess.
This match was put in a tough spot to follow three bangers in a row, not to mention a ladder match, and though the match quality on this show took a dip at this point, they worked hard and performed admirably.
CM Punk def. MJF—Dog Collar Match
In true MJF fashion, MJF trolled the crowd by playing CM Punk’s music and coming out to his own.
CM Punk walked out to Miseria Cantare by AFI in a nod to his ROH days. Only one guy seemed to get that reference, but the crowd ended up cheering for CM Punk instead of singing along to the song. CM Punk also walked out with baggy shorts.
The crowd either came down a bit for this match or was turned off by all the blood, including a blood-soaked mat.
Fans chanted “you deserve it” as a bloody MJF was being beaten down by CM Punk.
I’ve never seen a match so bloody that the referee had to go through multiple pairs of gloves. This was that match.
The biggest pop of this match went to Wardlow, when he finally betrayed MJF by refusing to give hm the Dynamite Diamond ring.
Britt Baker def. Thunder Rosa—AEW Women’s World Championship
Britt Baker walked out with a new AEW Women’s World Championship, and it was an upgrade to the previous version.
The signs of fatigue continued in the early goings of this match, though the crowd inevitably broke out into dueling chants for Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker.
This was one of Britt Baker’s better matches as champion, and the false finish after the first curb stomp really woke the crowd up.
Jon Moxley def. Bryan Danielson; William Regal Debuts
Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley became the second match with double-juice, which I believe is a first in AEW history. Since they did bleed together, they had no choice but to become a team.
William Regal got a louder pop than any spot in this match by far. He ultimately convinced Moxley and Danielson to shake hands.
Darby Allin, Sting and Sammy Guevara def. AHFO—Six-Man Tag Team Tornado Match
This was clearly positioned as the come-down match following Moxley-Danielson (Regal) and just before the main event.
Despite being in a popcorn spot, it wasn’t for a lack of effort as Isiah Kassidy and Sammy Guevara performed a Spanish Fly off a platform through two tables.
Not to be outdone, Sting hit a splash through double-decker tables.
Hangman Adam Page def. Adam Cole—AEW World Heavyweight Championship
Fans opened this match with hilarious chants of “let’s go Adam,” “let’s go Adam/Adam sucks” and “Adam.”
Headed into this show, I thought the crowd would be dead for this main event given how many potential bangers it would have to follow. Instead, this crowd is almost too alive with all these ironic chants for “Adam” overshadowing the match.
Fans choosing to chant “This is Awesome” and “This is Adam” tells me this is turning into a truly great match.
reDRagon made their inevitable outside interference, and of course Bobby Fish continued to heckle from the outside. Conspicuous by their absence were the Young Bucks.
Fans eventually dropped the Adam gimmick and began actually taking sides, chanting “let’s go Hangman/Adam Cole.”
This was a great main event despite having to follow some stiff competition.
