- Anonymous, a hacker organization, has taken down multiple Russian government websites, including the state-controlled Russia Today news agency.
- The attack, according to RT.com, delayed certain websites while bringing others offline for “long periods of time.”
Hackers affiliated with the Anonymous group announced the commencement of cyber operations that momentarily brought down RT.com, as well as the Kremlin, the Russian government, and Russian defense ministry websites.
RT’s coverage of the situation in Ukraine has been largely pro-Russian, with images of fireworks and joyous celebrations in freshly captured territory.
MPs in the United Kingdom have suggested that the TV station is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “personal propaganda tool” and that it should be banned.
DDoS assaults
Anonymous is a decentralized collective with no structure or leadership that has previously targeted the CIA, Islamic State, and the Church of Scientology.
According to Internet security expert Robert Potter, the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assault employed many systems to overload a targeted website, preventing any other traffic from passing through.
DDoS assaults are thought to be simple to launch and fight against.
One simple solution is to disable international traffic to a website, which might explain why it appears to be simpler to access RT.com from within Russia than from outside.
Russian cyber strike on the United States
In January, a US official intelligence brief warned that if NATO interfered to support Ukraine, Russia “would investigate” launching a potentially devastating cyberattack on the US.
Security experts have also warned that Russian-linked criminal groups may be emboldened to launch cyber assaults on Australia.
Earlier this week, Russian cyber troops launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) operations on the websites of many Ukrainian banks and other agencies.
Ukraine’s government has urged volunteers from the “hacking underground” to assist in protecting crucial infrastructure and spying on Russian forces.
