Hulu Renews ‘How I Met Your Father’ For Season 2

Hulu has renewed their new show How I Met Your Father for a second season. The second season will be twice the length of the current season and will have 20 episodes of the sitcom. 

How I Met Your Father stars Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, Suraj Sharma, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, and Tien Tran. Kim Cattrall also plays Duff’s character in the future and narrates the show. 

The show is a spinoff of the popular CBS hit How I Met Your Mother, which ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. How I met your Father, from This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, takes place in the same world as the original however follows a new cast of characters and takes place after the original series. In the pilot of How I Met Your Father, the audience learns that the two shows are tied together as two of the new characters live in the apartment that Ted, Marshall and Lily occupied in the original show. 

“Isaac and Elizabeth’s inspired vision for How I Met Your Father has proven to be true appointment viewing that fans cannot get enough of week to week,” Jordan Helman, head of scripted content for Hulu Originals, said. “The lives of these characters, as portrayed by the immensely talented cast led by Hilary Duff, are just starting to unfold and we’re thrilled to bring more of this group’s journey to our viewers with a super sized second season.”

How I Met Your Father however had a long road to the small screen. The series was originally pitched to CBS after How I Met Your Mother ended. In 2014, How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and Parks and Recreation’s Emily Spivey pitched How I Met Your Dad. While the pilot starred Greta Gerwig, CBS passed on the show. In 2016, Aptaker and Berger tried to make the show, however, it didn’t move ahead. You’re the Worst’s Allison Bennet also was hired to take a pass on the show but it similarly did not move ahead. 

Aptaker and Berger executive produce the current show with Bays, Thomas, director Pam Fryman and Adam Londy. Duff also serves as a producer while Bays, Thomas and Spivey are also credited as writers on the pilot.
