Andrew Garfield Comments On Potentially Returning As Spider-Man After ‘No Way Home’

Poor Andrew Garfield. The guy was absolutely bombarded by the press ahead of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home with everyone asking him if he was going to have a secret multiverse cameo (spoilers follow). He denied, denied, denied. But of course he had to, and now we know that yes, he and Tobey Maguire reprised their respective Peter Parkers for the movie.

Now Andrew Garfield is free to talk about it, and fans may be very interested about what he had to say to Variety about returning to the part, and potentially doing more work as Spider-Man after this.

First, it sounds like he could be done with the role since the movie allowed him some measure of closure on his prematurely canceled trilogy:

“I am so grateful. I’m just really, really grateful that I got to tie up some loose ends for the Peter that I was playing. I love that character and I’m grateful that I got to work with these incredible actors, this incredible director, and Marvel in conjunction with Sony. It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me. There was so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him. And also really supporting [Holland’s] Peter, and honoring his character completing that trilogy, not distracting or detracting from it.”

However, when asked if he’d potentially play Peter Parker again past this, he seems more than open to the idea:

“I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right. Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.”

The idea that fans have been proposed, that Sony may have also already proposed behind the scenes, is that their burgeoning universe of Spider-Man villains with two Venom movies, Morbius on the way and Kraven the Hunter coming, needs…an actual Spider-Man. Though Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker was not in the original “Venom” universe to start with, you could easily come up with some sort of superhero plot turn that has him transported to that world instead, and facing this growing collection of villains.

I would frankly be amazed if these talks were not already happening in the wake of how well Garfield’s Spider-Man was received in No Way Home. While no, his two movies were not terribly good compared to Maguire and Tom Holland’s, that’s certainly not Garfield’s fault, who is a great actor (and probably about to be nominated for an Oscar for Tick, Tick, Boom). Combine Sony’s need for an alternate universe Spider-Man, Holland taking a break from the part in the MCU, and Garfield’s interest, and I think we have our answer about what could be coming.
