Demon Slayer sure is…going place this season. Now in season 2, the Entertainment Arc District, we’re seeing a much different location far from the forests and wildlife of season 1. You could say things have gotten much…flashier.
Last night, all hell fully broke loose as we fully exited the era where Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Insokue had to poorly disguise themselves as women to investigate what happened to Tengen Uzui’s informant wives. Surprise, there’s an Upper Level demon lurking around, capturing and eating humans.
The episode opens with Tanjiro attempting to take on Daki, the demon in question who commands a magic belt that hits like a hundred flexible swords. Tanjiro tries water breathing before quickly giving up on that and turning to sun breathing, but that takes too much out of him and he can barely wield it effectively past one or two strikes. Still, he fights harder than Daki was expecting, but ultimately she’s distracted by what’s going on underground in her lair.
Her sentient magic belt ends up doing battle with Inosuke, who frees two of Tengen Uzui’s wives, who are also ninjas, but only one of them seems to be actually good at it, Makio. Zenitsu is also freed but ultimately Tengen Uzui himself shows up and we finally see his potential in combat as he tears up the rest of the magic belt like it’s nothing.
Demon Slayer has certainly taken a hard turn toward uh, a certain focus this season that was absent in season 1. That would be hyper-attractive women, including the lingerie-glad demon, Daki, and Tengen Uzui’s large-chested wives who are all dressed like Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters. I’m not scolding the show, and this does track with the source material, it’s just quite a shift as we really didn’t see anything like that in season 1 (that one spider demon lady, maybe?). But again, things are meant to be “flashier” in the Entertainment District storyline here.
Given that I haven’t read the manga, I don’t know where things go from here. We have essentially a repeat of the Mugen Train situation where we have to wonder if Tengen Uzui will be strong enough to kill Daki, who allegedly has already killed seven other hashiras at this point. And we’ll see if Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Insokue can be of more use this time around, as they didn’t really participate in the last Upper Demon fight that got the Flame Hashira killed.
And of course, the larger threat, Muzan, is still lurking in this district, looking like Michael Jackson. But he’s running out of Upper Level demons to defend him after season 1 had almost all the Lower ones taken out. Is he replacing them? I’m not sure how that demonic promotion process works.
Anyway, it’s a great, weird season so far, and I’m looking forward to every Sunday at this point.
