Umbra Shuts Front-End After Hackers Funnel Stolen Crypto Through Protocol

  • The exploiter has reportedly been trying to convert Ether to Bitcoin via a number of protocols, one of which is Umbra.
  • Umbra said that they are powerless to prevent anybody from using their smart contracts or a locally or independently hosted version of their open-source front end.

To make it more difficult for hackers to shift monies from previous high-profile attacks, crypto-protocol Umbra claimed it had shut down its front-end website. Umbra acknowledged on Tuesday in a post on X that their protocol was used to transfer around $800,000 worth of stolen assets.

Additionally, it said that it has decided to put the hosted version of its front end into maintenance mode and would restore it after it is confirmed that it will not hinder the ongoing recovery efforts.

Not long ago, the Kelp protocol was allegedly breached for more over $280 million, with hackers from North Korea allegedly being held responsible. The exploiter has reportedly been trying to convert Ether to Bitcoin via a number of protocols, one of which is Umbra.

No Complete Control

Several cryptocurrency platforms have taken action to block or hinder the hackers’ attempts to transfer the funds, and the United States has imposed heavy sanctions on North Korean hacking outfits. However, Umbra said that they are powerless to prevent anybody from using their smart contracts or a locally or independently hosted version of their open-source front end.

According to Roman Storm, co-founder of the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, pausing the front end may not be sufficient to evade punishment from the government. In August, Storm was found guilty of conspiring to run an unauthorized unlicensed money transmitting business, even though he maintained his innocence by claiming he had no say over the protocol’s implementation.

Storm, who was acquitted of conspiring to breach US sanctions, claimed that prosecutors in his case accused him of being dishonest when he said that he is unable to control Tornado Cash. He said that the authorities consider modifying the front end to be the same as managing the protocol in its entirety.
