David Sacks Steps Down as Trump Crypto and AI Czar

  • David Sacks steps down as Trump’s crypto and AI czar after 130 days.
  • Moves to PCAST co-chair role alongside top tech leaders and executives.
  • Sacks backs Trump’s AI plan for federal rules over state laws, citing bipartisan support.

One of the most influential figures in Washington’s crypto and AI policy world is moving on. David Sacks, who has served as President Donald Trump’s artificial intelligence and crypto czar since the start of his second term, has officially stepped down from the role after exhausting his 130-day limit as a special government employee.

But he is not leaving the building entirely.

A New Title, A Bigger Mandate

Sacks confirmed the change in a Bloomberg Television interview on Thursday, saying he will now serve as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, known as PCAST.

The council, established by Trump through an executive order this week, brings together some of the biggest names in technology, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen.

“Moving forward as co-chair of PCAST, I can now make recommendations on not just AI but an expanded range of technology topics,” Sacks said. “This is how I’ll be involved moving forward.”

What He Built in 130 Days

During his time as czar, Sacks was at the centre of some of the policy shifts in both AI and crypto in recent memory. Trump signed an executive order in his first week banning the development of a central bank digital currency and establishing a presidential working group on digital assets. In March 2025, the administration went further, creating a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile.

Several SEC investigations into crypto firms were dropped, and crypto-friendly leadership was installed across key regulatory agencies.

Sacks also called the defunding of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau his “personal favourite” achievement, describing it as removing the crypto industry’s most aggressive enforcement arm.

AI Legislation Could Be Next

Sacks hinted he will continue pushing for Trump’s recently released national AI framework, which calls for federal rules to override the growing patchwork of state-level AI laws. He expressed confidence that bipartisan support is within reach.
