A recent update to X’s Paid Partnerships Policy caused confusion across the crypto community after users noticed that “financial products” and “crypto” were no longer listed under prohibited industries.
The updated policy page shows categories such as pharmaceuticals, tobacco, weapons, and weight loss products under prohibited content. However, crypto is not included on that list.
The change quickly sparked speculation that cryptocurrency promotions were either quietly banned or newly allowed on the platform.
X executive Nikita Bier responded to the confusion, saying the removal was an error that had been corrected.
“This was an error and we fixed it this morning,” Bier wrote, adding that there are certain markets where crypto promotion is restricted by local law and that documentation has been updated to reflect that.
The clarification confirms that cryptocurrency-related paid promotions are allowed on X, but they must follow strict disclosure rules.
Under X’s Paid Partnerships Policy, any post that involves compensation, gifted products, affiliate links, or brand agreements must include a visible “Paid Partnership” label. The disclosure can be enabled in the content settings while creating a post.
X defines paid partnerships as situations where a third-party brand provides money or incentives to promote products or services. The platform says the goal is transparency.
In announcing the feature, Bier stated that undisclosed promotions “hurt the integrity of the product and lead people to distrust the content they read on X.”
Focus on Transparency, Not Bans
The platform clarified that it is currently focused on undisclosed pay-per-post promotions, which have increased significantly in recent months.
Users can report violations through X’s reporting system, and stronger enforcement tools are expected to be added soon. The brief policy confusion shows how closely crypto creators and influencers watch platform rules. For many KOLs and content creators, paid promotions are a major revenue stream.
For now, crypto advertising remains permitted on X, as long as posts are properly labeled and comply with local laws. The message from X is clear: transparency first.
