CM Punk Challenges AJ Styles To A World Title Match On WWE Raw

  • AJ Styles said Gunther is good, but in order to retire Styles, he’ll need to be phenomenal. Styles was quickly interrupted by CM Punk, who asked Styles what he was doing. Punk asked why AJ was putting his career on the line. Of course, AJ Styles took exception to this and became defensive.
  • CM Punk said he’s known AJ for more than 20 years. Punk didn’t want Styles to retire without having faced him one last time. Styles told Punk he would beat Gunther and come after Punk’s world title. Punk did Styles one better by challenging him to a world title match tonight in Toronto.
  • AJ Styles accepted CM Punk’s challenge and the match was made official for the main event. Backstage, Finn Balor congratulated Punk and thanked him for giving him his flowers last week. Punk told Balor that he needs to leave the Judgment Day, and Balor’s babyface turn seems to be underway.

Rhiyo Def. The Judgment Day

  • Roxanne Perez scored a nearfall on Iyo Sky. Michael Cole made it seem like it should have been a three count. He was all over referee Eddie Orengo, but Vaquer kicked out well before three.
  • Perez and Morgan continued to develop their tag team chemistry. They hit an impressive double-team Codebreaker into a Russian Leg Sweep on Iyo Sky. Though the move was a hair off, it looked good would be a great finisher.
  • Rhea Ripley made the hot tag and brought the house town. In the middle of Rhea’s comeback, Vaquer dove to the outside. Stephanie slipped a bit, and Michael Cole noted that her ankle might not be 100% (kayfabe.)
  • Perez and Morgan tried their double-team Codebreaker Leg Sweep combo again, but Iyo Sky flew out of nowhere and kicked Morgan out of the sky. Ripley stuck Perez with the Riptide for the win.

Rhiyo vs. The Judgment Day Match Grade: B+

The Vision Appears Live On WWE Raw

  • Paul Heyman, by design, was booed out of the building. “If you keep booing, this is going to go on all night long,” said Heyman. Heyman referred to Austin Theory as “The Pressure.”
  • As Heyman introduced the entire Vision, Logan Paul got the most heat as always. Heyman ran the footage from two weeks ago and isolated the moment when Adam Pearce put his hands on Bron Breakker. Heyman then aired footage from last week when Pearce left a pair of brass knuckles on the floor that Rey Mysterio used to beat Austin Theory.
  • Heyman invited Adam Pearce to the ring. Paul instructed the fans to stand, give the middle finger and boo Adam Pearce. Fans booed, but not because Heyman told them to, they were booing Heyman.
  • Pearce walked to the ring and admitted he was wrong for putting his hands on Bron Breakker first. Pearce apologized to Breakker and pledged to the Judgment Day that it would never happen again. Pearce lifted Breakker’s suspension and booked him for the Royal Rumble. Pearce took it a step further and booked the entire Vision in the Rumble.

Austin Theory Def. Rey Mysterio

  • The Vision tried to get involved early on, but they were neutralized by Penta and Dragon Lee, who cornered Rey. Rey Mysterio hit a diving senton on Theory before Raw went to commercial.
  • Rey Mysterio was closing in on a win, but the Vision got involved. Penta and Dragon Lee evened the odds yet again with dives to the outside. Rey Mysterio was distracted by the chaos on the outside, and when he tried to get back into the ring, Theory stuck him with a Stomp for the win.
  • After the match, the Vision attacked Penta, Mysterio and Lee. Breakker floored Dragon Lee with a Spear followed by a Paul from Grace Frog Splash. Penta took a Spear and a Tsunami as Michael Cole wondered where Pearce was. Cole noted the phone call from last week (from The Big Man) and Cole asked if Pearce would be hesitant in exacting his authority.
  • Breakker hit a Super Spear on Penta for good measure as fans barked. Raw belongs to the vision.

Austin Theory vs. Rey Mysterio Match Grade: B-

Alpha Academy Def. American Made, The New Day And Los Americanos

  • Jey Uso was ringside as Jimmy was back in the states attending to personal issues (i.e. Naomi’s pregnancy.)
  • Akira Tozawa took a huge clothesline from Julius Creed and sold it brilliantly by doing a backflip. Brutus followed up with a Brutus Ball onto everybody not named the New Day as American Made dominated early.
  • Raw came back from break with all three teams taking turns working over Akira Tozawa. Tozawa got the better of Los Americanos and actually won the crowd over. Fans wanted the hot tag to Otis and they got it as Otis ran wild. Otis hit the caterpillar on Bravo, and Tozawa picked up where he left off by running wild with suicide dives on every tag team.
  • Terry Bollea-Tozawa ripped his shirt off to a huge pop. Grayson Waller got involved, finally slowing down Tozawa. Jey Uso superkicked Waller into the crowd and he was never seen or heard from for the remainder of the match. Otis tagged Tozawa back in and he hit a flying Senton on Julius for the win. Once upon a time, Julius was spoken about in the same breath as Bron Breakker. I’m not saying he’ll never get there, but it’s wild that he just lost to Tozawa.

Tag Team Fatal 4-Way Grade: A-

CM Punk Vs. AJ Styles Ends In A DQ As Finn Balor Interferes

  • There were dueling chants for AJ Styles and CM Punk. Cole made it clear that if Styles won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, his match against Gunther on Saturday would be for the title.
  • Styles stopped Punk with a dropkick, sending him to the outside. AJ followed up with a sliding knee to Punk. Back in the ring, Punk hit a reverse Irish whip, sending Styles flying sternum-first into the corner. Punk hit a rare shining wizard for a nearfall.
  • Styles hit an Ushigoroshi on Punk for a nearfall of his own. Fans chanted “this is awesome” at a surprisingly early point in this match. Punk fought off Styles from the top rope and hit a flying elbow for a two count.
  • Punk countered a sliding knee on the outside and hit a GTS on Styles. Babyface Phil dragged AJ’s limp body and tried to toss him back into the ring. Punk couldn’t do it in time, so he slid in the ring himself. AJ followed him into the ring, barely beating the 10 count. Styles hit the Styles Clash on Punk for a nearfall.
  • Punk and Styles struggled in the corner while Punk attempted a GTS, but Finn Balor hit the ring and forced the DQ to a huge chorus of boos. Finn was barred from participating in the Royal Rumble (Pearce said it was full) and Liv Morgan scolded him backstage for considering leaving the Judgment day. Balor attacked both Punk and Styles, squishing Punk with three Coups de Grace.
