A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel to HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, has arrived. If you’ve finished “The Hedge Knight” and are wondering when the next episode drops, you’re in the right place. Keep scrolling for the full release schedule, plus the reason why Season 1 has only six episodes.
Based on the Dunk and Egg fantasy novellas by George R.R. Martin, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set 70 years after House of the Dragon and a century before Game of Thrones. The series follows the heroic adventures of the courageous hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his intelligent young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who is training to become a knight, as they journey across Westeros.
“The difference between this show and House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones is you’re not going from Winterfell to The Wall, or checking out what’s going on in King’s Landing and then Essos,” Claffey, who plays Dunk, told Deadline. “It is you with Dunk for the entirety following his journey. That probably increased the anxiety of the whole thing, when you realize how much you’re going to be on camera and have to carry it.”
In addition to lead stars Claffey and Ansell, the freshman drama also features Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Lyonel Baratheon, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle the Tall and Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen.
Following the premiere of Episode 1, the series boasts an 88% critics’ score and an 80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. NPR critic Glen Weldon called the spinoff a “small, grounded story you can watch without a wiki open on your phone,” adding that it’s “far lighter, faster and breezier than the shows that preceded it. ”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 will have six episodes, each running 30-40 minutes, making it a smaller order for HBO. (Game of Thrones’ other spinoff, House of the Dragon, debuted with 10 episodes, while its second season had eight.)
Why Are There Only Six Episodes In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1?
The shorter episode count (six episodes) was beneficial for showrunner Ira Parker, who told The Hollywood Reporter it was ideal for the type of story they wanted to tell.
“The biggest thing that was very helpful was learning the show didn’t have to be 10 episodes, one hour each. Being able to do six episodes, anywhere between 30 or 40 minutes, was perfect for us,” Parker explained, adding that it meant they didn’t “have to stretch the story.”
Parker continued, “It meant that we could do a faithful adaptation of this — which obviously is very much what George wanted, and what I was very keen to deliver one because I’m a big fan of these novellas. This way, the stuff we did add doesn’t feel tangential. It feels like it’s filling out these novellas in a way that hopefully George would have done if he had just written them as novels instead of 80-page nuggets.”
