The Boston Red Sox made a surprising run up in the standings after cutting ties with franchise slugger Rafael Devers this past season and it could be time to build on that success.
After earning their first playoff bid in four years, the Red Sox seem determined to supplement their roster with some additional win-now pieces. Most recently, that meant acquiring veteran starter Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for young players Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts.
“Beyond his desire to pitch in Boston, the Red Sox see Gray as an experienced veteran whose competitiveness can complement their young ace in (Garrett) Crochet,” Jen McCaffrey wrote for The Athletic. “As Gray begins the next chapter of his career, the Red Sox hope he can help bolster the rotation and fortify a young team for a deeper playoff run.”
But now, with the Red Sox’s sights set decidedly on going deep into the postseason next year, it’s possible that some additional trades are on the horizon.
“The Red Sox have several areas they need to address this offseason,” according to Christopher Smith of MassLive. “Free agency is one route to address the needs. Trading top prospects is another avenue.”
In acquiring Crochet and Gray, the Red Sox demonstrated that they are willing to leverage some talent from their farm system to fill the big-league club’s needs. And if they continue to go that route, it’s clear that other teams will most covet pitcher Payton Tolle, who is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the team’s system by Baseball America.
Tolle, who could very well find himself on another team by the start of next season, broke his silence on how the latest Red Sox trade updates are affecting his outlook.
“I’ve kind of tried to separate myself from social media a little bit,” Tolle told Smith. “I’ll hop on every now and then just to maybe try to see the latest news.”
After making a brief major league debut with the Red Sox this past season, logging 19 strikeouts and giving up 11 earned runs in three starts, Polle seems to be on the cusp of becoming a significant contributor in the show.
And with Tolle shying away from trade rumors and speculation, the pitcher added that he’s more focused on controlling what he can by focusing on adding a changeup to his repertoire. Whether that means he will have a new offering to throw as a member of the Red Sox or for another team in the near future remains to be seen.
