The Northern Lights could be visible as far south as southern Minnesota Saturday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which predicts a lower likelihood of visibility Sunday and Monday.

The NOAA forecast a Kp index of four on a scale of nine for Saturday night.

A Kp in the range of three to five means the aurora will become brighter and there will be more auroral activity as it moves further from the poles.

Minor to moderate radio blackouts are likely, with a slight chance of a “strong” or greater blackout between Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday’s forecast is more muted, with visibility expected only in northern Minnesota and a Kp of two.

Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Maine are either north or touching the view line (see below). The Northern Lights have a higher chance of being seen in Alaska and across northern Canada.
