TRON: Ares, the third film in the TRON franchise, starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Jeff Bridges, is coming to digital streaming this week.
The release of TRON: Ares comes 43 years after the debut of the original TRON movie in 1982 and 15 years after the release of franchise sequel, TRON: Legacy, in 2010. Joachim Rønning is the director of TRON: Ares, which opened in theaters on Oct. 10. The film also stars Evan Peters, Jodie Turner Smith, Arturo Castro, Hasan Minhaj and Gillian Anderson.
The logline for the new TRON movie reads, “TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares (Leto), who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
Peters plays Julian Dillinger in TRON: Ares, the head of the tech conglomerate whose plan is to use 3D printing to make his AI digital constructs a reality. Among Julian’s creations are military grade vehicles and weaponry, as well as super soldiers including Ares and Athena (Turner-Smith).
Julian’s rival in AI technology is Eve Kim (Lee), who wants to use her AI tools to create resources that will benefit people worldwide. Both Eve and Julian face one major challenge, though, since their digital creations won’t last any longer than 29 minutes in the real world — that is, unless they can crack the “permanence code” created by Kevin Flynn (Bridges), which will make their creations permanent.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced recently that TRON: Ares will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Rated PG-13, TRON: Ares will be available for purchase for $29.99 on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. Since digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices, TRON: Ares should be available to rent for 48 hours for $24.99.
In addition to the digital release of TRON: Ares, the film will also be available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday. Jan. 6, according to WDSHE.
Jared Leto Was Thrilled To Work With ‘TRON’ Franchise Star Jeff Bridges
TRON: Ares marks the third TRON film for Bridges, who originated the role of Kevin Flynn in the original and reprised the character opposite Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in TRON: Legacy.
In an interview with ABC 7 Los Angeles’ On the Red Carpet program, Leto said that Bridges was treated with reverence when he arrived for filming.
“When he walked on the set for the first time, everyone applauded,” Leto told On the Red Carpet. “He’s everything that you think he’s gonna be. He’s kind, he’s generous, he’s fun, he’s funny, he’s perfect, you know, of course, in every take.”
Featuring the music of Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), TRON: Ares is new on PVOD on Dec. 2.
