Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Maxton Hall – The World Between Us season two.
Season two of Maxton Hall – The World Between Us ends with a devastating setback for protagonist Ruby Bell, and the fallout will likely be a major driving force of the already-in-the-works third season.
Prime Video’s hit German-language drama show is based on Mona Kasten’s book series and centers on Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten), an ambitious teen from a working-class background who attends the elite private school called Maxton Hall on a scholarship. Ruby’s life takes an unexpected turn after she accidentally catches her professor, Graham Sutton (Eidin Jalali), having an affair with a student, Lydia Beaufort (Sonja Weißer). The situation becomes even more complicated when Ruby falls for James Beaufort (Damian Hardung), Lydia’s seemingly-obnoxious twin brother.
Season one, adapted from Kasten’s novel Save Me, was a major win for Prime Video, becoming its most-watched international original series of all time and landing the No. 1 spot on the streamer’s charts in more than 120 countries. Season two premiered on November 7 and concluded on Friday. But Ruby and James’ story isn’t over yet, because Maxton Hall has already been renewed for a third season.

In the second season of Maxton Hall, based on Kasten’s Save You, Ruby and James face more roadblocks in their relationship at the hands of James’ disapproving father, Mortimer Beaufort (Fedja van Huêt), who tries to destroy Ruby’s life at every chance he gets.
Much of James’ storyline focuses on him grieving the death of his mom Cordelia (Clelia Sarto), who died of a stroke in season one, helping run Beaufort companies and trying to be a better version of himself for Ruby as well as Lydia, who’s pregnant with twins. Ruby makes strides in fulfilling her dream of attending Oxford and gets accepted to the school, but she loses everything she worked for in the finale.
In the penultimate episode of the season, Elaine (Eli Riccardi), who’s in love with James, and Cyril (Ben Felipe) who has unrequited feelings for Lydia, see Lydia and Graham embracing in a forest pair. Elaine tells Cyril to take a picture, and viewers are lead to believe that the incriminating photo will be the undoing of the season, but it’s a loose end from season one that comes into play.
In the finale, it’s revealed that the headmaster received a photo of Ruby and Graham talking closely at the party from the season one premiere, and thinks they’re having an affair. Ruby tries to explain that it was a harmless situation, but a witness’ statement conflicts with her account.
Ruby and Graham are immediately suspended from Maxton Hall, just as she was about to take her last scholarship exam to attend Oxford. In the final scene, Lydia and Graham make eye contact as he’s escorted into a police car, and Ruby cries as James comforts her.
By the end of the season, Ruby and her family are left with nothing — due to Mortimer’s meddling. Because of him, Ruby’s mom was fired from her job and the bakery that her family was working to buy back is sold, squashing their hopes. Ruby also loses an offer for a scholarship grant because of Mortimer’s influence in society.
Things aren’t much better for James, either. In her will, Cordelia leaves all her assets, properties and shares in the family companies to Mortimer, excluding James and Lydia, though the twins suspect that their dad tampered with the document. Mortimer also cuts off James and Lydia financially.

Maxton Hall was renewed for a third season in June, five months before season two debuted on Prime Video. Hardung and Herbig-Matten also shared the news in an Instagram video, giving fans a glimpse of their scripts for season three, episode one.
“One last time, back to school,” Hardung said, seemingly confirming that Maxton Hall with end with its upcoming third season. This would make sense, since season three is based on Kasten’s third and final book in her series, titled Save Us.
In the book, Ruby and James’ relationship is further tested as they deal with the photo scandal, and Ruby grapples with her Oxford hopes being out of reach. Since the TV series is largely similar to the books, season three will probably follow the same major plot points as the source material.
“Reviewing the motivations and actions of the characters and, if necessary, redefining certain areas of the book is quite a challenge,” Maxton Hall head writer and executive producer Ceylan Yildirim told Deadline. “By respecting the original storyline, while adding further layers to the narrative in consultation with Mona Kasten and our partners at Amazon, we hope to continue to delight both fans of the books and our global streaming audience in fresh and exciting ways in the third season.”
Like past seasons, the final installment will likely be comprised of six episodes. There’s no release date yet, but Maxton Hall has released a new season every year since its premiere in 2024. Season three will probably return sometime in 2026.
Season two of Maxton Hall is streaming on Prime Video.
