‘Zootopia 2’ Lands Disney’s Highest Rotten Tomatoes Score Since ‘Encanto’

The reviews are in, and it’s looking like Zootopia 2, out today ahead of Thanksgiving, is going to be excellent. The sequel to the billion-dollar grossing original Zootopia, the film is looking to recreate those numbers, and well, they might.

As it stands, Zootopia 2 has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, which ticked down 1% since last night. That would still make it the highest-scored Disney Animation movie (excluding separate Pixar projects) since 2021’s insta-classic Encanto, four years ago and six releases ago. If it had held that 93%, it would have reached Raya and the Last Dragon at the same score. Here’s a list of the last Disney Animation Studios projects, extending back to the original Zootopia. As you can see, Zootopia 2 is one of only a few at 90%+, and there have been a fair number of misses. Critically, though not often at the box office.

  • Zootopia 2 – 92%
  • Mufasa: The Lion King – 56%
  • Moana 2 – 60%
  • Wish – 48%
  • Strange World – 72%
  • Encanto – 92%
  • Raya and the Last Dragon – 93%
  • Frozen II – 77%
  • The Lion King – 52%’
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet – 88%
  • Moana – 95%
  • Zootopia – 98%

As you can see, the 92% score is less than the absolutely sky-high 98% of the original Zootopia, which was released nine years ago in 2016. Those are Toy Story numbers. Fans scored it a bit lower at a 92%, but that’s still extremely high. Here’s the synopsis of the second film:

“In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2,” detectives Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before.”

How Zootopia 2 will fare at the box office remains to be seen. The only catch here is that Wicked: For Good came out last weekend and did wildly good numbers, and that will no doubt carry over here to some extent over the holiday. That said, I would be extremely surprised if Zootopia 2 did not beat the $75 million opening of the first movie. As for that total gross? $1.02 billion? It’s certainly possible. Only two movies have crossed that mark in 2025, and one is a Disney production. That’s the live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch. The number one movie of the year is Ne Zha 2, the animated feature that was huge in China, and has made $1.9 billion. Nothing is touching that. I do believe people love Zootopia enough to make a billion within reach, however.

Numbers will come in soon, as will more reviews, and maybe the scores will increase even further. We’ll keep an eye on it.
