Bugonia, Emma Stone’s alien invasion satire from director Yorgos Lanthimos, is coming to digital streaming this week. Find out when and where you can watch the movie at home.
Bugonia was released in select theaters on Oct. 24 and expands to theaters nationwide on Oct. 31. The official logline for Bugonia reads, “Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.”
Stone stars as the CEO, Michelle, while Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis play the conspiracy theorists, Teddy and Don. Rated R, Bugonia also stars Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone.
Bugonia will be available on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Nov. 25, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced on Monday. Bugonia will be available to purchase on PVOD on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube for $24.99.
Since digital rentals generally cost $5 less than purchase prices, the film should be available to rent for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
How Did Audiences And Critics Receive ‘Bugonia’?
Bugonia marks Stone’s fourth feature film with Yorgos Lanthimos, following her roles in 2018’s The Favourite, 2023’s Poor Things (which earned her a Best Actress Oscar) and 2024’s Kinds of Kindness.
The film, which is still playing in theaters, earned $16.9 million domestically and $15.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $32.7 million. Bugonia had a $45 million to $55 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to Deadline.
Bugonia was a huge hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, earning an 87% “fresh” critics’ score based on 279 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are at the top of their game in Bugonia, a bonkers entertainment that applies director Yorgos Lanthimos’ whip-smart method to modern society’s madness.”
Audiences, meanwhile, gave the film an 84% “fresh” Popcornmeter score on RT based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. The RT audience summary reads, “Wildly audacious, Bugonia may be the bleakest film yet in Yorgos’ filmography, sure to satiate fans of peculiar, deranged, and pessimistic satire.”
Bugonia arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.
