Netflix Has Cancelled A Third Zack Snyder Project, Maybe A Fourth

After his controversial time with the DCEU was finished, spanning Man of Steel, Batman V Superman and two cuts of Justice League, with the second fully his own, it seemed Zack Snyder had a promising new path forward for his projects through Netflix. Now? That has continued a five year trend of going poorly with the cancellation of his final current offering on the service.

Snyder leapt back into the genre that put him on the map with Dawn of the Dead, heading back to zombies for Army of the Dead. The film was decent enough, attracting okay scores from fans and critics. It got a spin-off movie, Army of Thieves, but there were plans for a larger universe with more films and an anime series. Reportedly, all that was cancelled in August 2024, likely because of this next project.

That would be Rebel Moon, where Snyder was given essentially four films to work with, PG-13 cuts and R-rated cuts, a weird attempt to emulate his “Snyder Cut” crazy for Justice League back at DC. The worse films, the awkward PG-13 cuts, were shown first, well ahead of the (incredibly long) R-rated versions. But the films ranged from horrible to merely not good, and an even more ambitious plan that included many more films and other projects. It did, in fact, get a few of those, but they were relatively minor in scale. Short comic runs, a VR game, a small-scale Netflix Games title. But the enormous universe Snyder wanted was nowhere to be found.

Now, it’s just been confirmed that another Snyder project, his last “live” one on Netflix, has been cancelled. That would be Twilight of the Gods, an actually halfway decent animated series based on Norse mythology, but it will not return for a second season. It’s pretty unusual, given that Netflix has really leaned into animation and loads of its series, even lower profile ones, are granted multiple seasons.

Finally, there was previously news that Snyder was ready to throw $100 million into an LAPD-based action film, but recent reports say that may no longer be happening. Much of this seems to all stem from Rebel Moon, a franchise that Snyder and Netflix had high hopes for, and for which he was given a lot of leeway for. That did not pan out, and four cancelled or questionable projects later, here we are.

As for Snyder, his next film is a “passion project” (weren’t they all?) called The Last Photograph that is not through Netflix at all, and recently secured financing. It stars Stuart Martin and Fra Free, who were both in Rebel Moon.
