Wicked: For Good, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is poised to make at least $150 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office after earning $30.8 million in preview screenings this week.
Wicked: For Good, of course, is the second part of a sprawling two-movie adaptation of the 2003 blockbuster Broadway musical Wicked. The first movie, aptly titled Wicked, earned $112.5 million from 3,888 theaters in its opening weekend frame a year ago and went on to earn $474.6 million domestically and $281.4 million internationally for a final worldwide box office tally of $756 million.
Adding in the $30.8 million the movie made in previews throughout the week, Wicked: For Good is eyeing an opening day domestic tally of $68.5 million, according to Deadline. Given the strong opening day numbers, Deadline is projecting that Wicked: For Good will open with $150 million in ticket sales from $4,115 theaters. Variety, however, pegs the film to make anywhere from $150 million to $180 million.
If the numbers come in at the low end, Wicked: For Good will have the second-biggest weekend opening for a movie in 2025 behind A Minecraft Movie’s $162.7 million domestic take in early April.
No matter whether Wicked: For Good opens up with $150 million in domestic ticket sales or $180 million, it will easily set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever for a Broadway adaptation, which was set by Wicked when it made $112.5 million in its opening weekend in 2024.
A $150 Million Opening Is In Line With Most Pre-Release Projections For ‘Wicked: For Good’
Hollywood’s major trade publications began releasing opening box office projections for Wicked: For Good on Tuesday.
Among them, Deadline forecasted a $125 million to $150 million opening, while Variety projected that the film would open between $150 million and $160 million in its first three-day frame. The Hollywood Reporter’s projection for the Wicked: For Good opening was more conservative at $120 million, while Box Office Pro projected that the film would open somewhere between $145 million and $175 million in ticket sales.
In its report on Friday, Variety noted that Universal was also projecting a $125 million opening weekend for Wicked: For Good.
Given the dominant presence of Wicked: For Good this weekend, no other major films are slated to open as wide as the Universal Pictures release. The only other film with a major opening this week is Sony Pictures Entertainment/Screen Gems’ action thriller SISU: Road to Revenge, which is opening in 2,222 venues in North America.
The box office estimates for Wicked: For Good will be updated throughout the weekend.
