Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s Wicked follow-up movie, Wicked: For Good, is new in theaters this weekend and with it comes a new batch of songs for fans to add to their music libraries.
Erivo reprises her role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Grande is back as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in Wicked: For Good, which begins showing in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
The release of the film comes almost one year after the release of the first Wicked film, which, combined with Wicked: For Good is an adaptation of the classic 2003 Broadway version starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. Stephen Schwartz wrote the lyrics and composed the music for Wicked on Broadway, with the book of the musical by Winnie Holzman. The playwright’s book is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Holzman teamed with Dana Fox to write the screenplays for Wicked and Wicked: For Good, which features Schwartz’s original Broadway tunes. For Wicked: For Good, Schwartz composed two new songs— “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble,” which are performed in the movie by Erivo and Grande, respectively.
Wicked: For Good – The Soundtrack will be released on Friday, timed to coincide with the nationwide release of the film. While fans who want to purchase the soundtrack on vinyl and CD will have to wait until brick and mortar retailers open on Friday, digital audio and video products are typically available for download at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT the day they are released.
A prequel story to The Wizard of Oz that eventually intertwines with the classic tale, Wicked: For Good also stars Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Ethan Slater as Boq.
The ‘Wicked: For Good’ Soundtrack Will Feature 11 Songs
Wicked: For Good – The Soundtrack is being released by Republic Records and features 11 tracks composed by Stephen Schwartz.
Unlike the tunes from the first Wicked movie and most of the songs in Wicked: For Good, Schwartz’s new songs — “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble” — will be eligible for awards season consideration, including the Oscars, since they are original compositions that were written specifically for the new film.
