Kimani Vidal, Stefon Diggs And More

Welcome back to the weekly start or sit series, where we take a look at some of the biggest decisions in fantasy football. In order to make this advice go beyond the obvious, some ground rules need to be set.

Only running backs and wide receivers ranked outside the Top 20 are eligible to be picked as the best start of the week. That means everyone ranked at 20 or lower is able to be selected for the best sit of the week.

For tight ends, quarterbacks, and defenses, that will go down to the Top 10. We’ll be referring to these baseline rankings from Fantasy Pros Week 10 expert consensus rankings (PPR).

One final reminder is that when referencing fantasy points allowed, these are talking about 0.5 PPR scoring. However, that being said, the overall concept is so helpful that it applies to our PPR analysis as well. Let’s dive into these start or sit decisions!

ForbesWeek 10 Fantasy Football Sleepers: 5 Players You Should Target

Breakout Wide Receiver: Quentin Johnston (WR28 – Start)

Despite only drawing five targets, Quentin Johnston had a big game in Week 9 with 15.3 points (PPR). Although Johnston had a stretch of rough games, let’s not forget that in weeks one through four, he had 14 points every game with two 20 point games.

Now, Johnston takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have allowed the 3rd fantasy PPG to wide receivers on the year. Week 10 is a perfect spot for Johnston to build off that momentum and return to his early season form.

Sit Wide Receiver: Stefon Diggs (WR17 – Sit)

Of the receivers eligible for this list, Stefon Diggs worries me the most. Diggs has been solid but hasn’t cracked 14 points since Week 5.

At this point, Diggs is a strong flex play, but you need to look at the matchup with him. In Week 10, Diggs takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have allowed the 21st most PPG to wide receivers on the year.

If you have the option to choose between a player like Johnston and Diggs, take Johnston, who has a significantly better matchup.

Breakout Running Back: Bucky Irving (RB21 – Start)

While some may be a bit scared of Bucky Irving coming back with a slow start, if he plays, you need to start him. Irving is an elite talent who is averaging 18 PPG on the year so far.

Another concern may be the matchup with the New England Patriots, allowing the 29th most PPG to running backs this year. Regardless, while Irving may not put up RB1 numbers in his first week back, he should be counted on as an RB2 at the very least, given his upside.

Sit Running Back: Kimani Vidal (RB17 – Sit)

In two of Kimani Vidal’s last three games, he’s gone under eight points. Granted, Vidal had 19.7 points in Week 8, but this is now the 2nd time during this three game span that he’s had less than 2.6 YPC.

Now, if the Los Angeles Chargers were in a spot where Vidal had a great matchup, this would be different. However, the Steelers have given up just the 23rd most PPG to running backs on the year. Keep Vidal on your bench if possible.

Breakout Tight End: Harold Fannin Jr (TE11 – Start)

Harold Fannin Jr has been fantastic this year, averaging 10.7 PPG as a rookie. Over the last four weeks, Fannin has over 10 points in three games and eight targets in two games.

Up to this point, the Indianapolis Colts have been a great matchup for tight ends, allowing the 5th most PPG to the position. It’s worth noting that the Colts just upgraded their defense by trading for Sauce Gardner, but this should still be a good matchup for Fannin, even with that in mind.

Sit Tight End: Dallas Goedert (TE8 – Sit)

Dallas Goedert is averaging 14.4 PPG on the year, so it’s hard to say to sit him if you need a streamer. At the same time, it’s tough to trust Goedert when you look at how volatile touchdowns are.

Goedert has just three games with over five targets on the year, and he’s failed to cross four in each of his past two games. While the Green Bay Packers are a good matchup, having allowed the 8th most PPG to tight ends, it feels like a better play to start someone with more consistent target volume, such as Fannin.

Breakout Quarterback: Justin Fields (Q16 – Start)

The reason Justin Fields is ranked so low right now is that it’s not a lock that he will start for the New York Jets in Week 10. If Fields plays, however, he needs to be in your starting lineup.

It’s hard to see the Jets not starting Fields after he helped them get their first win last week. When Fields has 13 or more passing attempts, he’s scored at least 20 points in all but one game due to his rushing ability.

Now, to be fair, the Cleveland Browns are also a tough matchup, allowing the 26th most PPG to quarterbacks this year. Even so, Fields’ proven ability as a runner makes him a must start quarterback as long as he’s the Jets starter.

Sit Quarterback: Bo Nix (QB6 – Sit)

Of the eligible players, Bo Nix is the player you should be most concerned about. Nix is averaging 20 PPG, but the 7-2 Denver Broncos take on the 2-6 Las Vegas Raiders.

It’s not a great matchup by any means, with the Raiders allowing the 14th most PPG to quarterbacks, and the game script is what worries me more than anything. Based on how each team has looked this year, it’s possible the Broncos don’t need to rely on Nix much this game in what could be an easy win.

Breakout D/ST: Chicago Bears (D/ST12 – Start)

When looking beyond the obvious for a strong defensive start, the Chicago Bears have a solid matchup. The Bears are averaging 5.8 PPG on the year, but most importantly, they take on the New York Giants.

With the Giants suffering multiple crucial injuries this year, they don’t have a ton of weapons for Jaxson Dart to rely on. The Giants have been an above average matchup, averaging the 13th most PPG to opposing defenses.

Sit D/ST: Jacksonville Jaguars (D/ST9 – Sit)

This year, the Jacksonville Jaguars are averaging 6.4 PPG, which isn’t nearly enough to make up for their tough matchup. In Week 10, the Jaguars take on the Houston Texans, who have allowed just the 19th most PPG to defenses.

As we’ve talked about before, when looking to make a start or sit decision before two defenses, almost always take the one with a better matchup.
