The Los Angeles Dodgers can hardly be considered an underdog, but they did overcome some obstacles en route to their second consecutive World Series championship this year.
The team was a bit of a regular season disappointment as their bullpen struggled to maintain leads toward the end of the season. And it took an extra-innings effort in a Game 7 for the Dodgers to finally best the scrappy Toronto Blue Jays.
But the team ultimately made good on projections that it would become Major League Baseball’s first repeat champions in a quarter of a century and now the Dodgers will be looking to make it three in a row.
With those aspirations, the Dodgers seem likely to engage in yet another blockbuster offseason of star acquisitions. After acquiring Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, then Tanner Scott and Blake Snell, among many other players, the Dodgers could target an offensive upgrade for the outfield this winter.
“The Dodgers are expected to make a play for No. 1 free agent Kyle Tucker, who’d fit nicely into the National League’s best lineup,” Jon Heyman reported for the New York Post. “Dodgers people are said to love Tucker, and outfield is their one area of less than great strength.”
After another impressive season, though it was mired in injury, Tucker is set to command a long-term contract that could be worth as much as $400 million going forward. That might be a large price to pay for a team with as many financial commitments as the Dodgers have, but it’s hard to count them out from virtually any roster upgrade given their last two offseasons.
With that in mind, the team has been projected to win the Tucker sweepstakes by offering a decade-long deal.
“Don’t be surprised if the Dodgers add another big name to their already loaded roster,” Kristopher Knox wrote for Bleacher Report. “Prediction: Tucker signs a 10-year deal with the Dodgers.”
It might be hard for the rest of Major League Baseball to stomach a deal that brings Tucker to the reigning champions, but the Dodgers can’t be expected to feel too bad for the competition as they look to follow their latest title with another one.
