Senne Lammens Is Already Proving To Be A Big Upgrade For Man Utd

Senne Lammens didn’t do anything outstanding in Manchester United’s statement win over Liverpool on Sunday, but he did enough and that in itself made his performance noteworthy. After struggling to find a reliable goalkeeper, Ruben Amorim might finally have found one in the Belgian.

There wasn’t much fanfare around Lammens’ arrival at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp. Manchester United was linked with Argentina and Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, but it was a relatively unknown 23-year-old that the club moved for instead, signing Lammens for a reported transfer fee of £18m.

Two games into his United career and Lammens looks well worth that outlay. The Belgian kept a clean sheet in his debut against Sunderland – Manchester United’s first clean sheet of the season – and was solid in the 2-1 away victory at Anfield on Sunday. More than once, he stopped Liverpool’s fearsome forward line from finding the net.

While Altay Bayinder and Andre Onana were both weak at claiming crosses, Lammens showed his strength by plucking several balls out of the air against Liverpool. He was a reassuring presence behind a Manchester United defensive line that has been very shaky on occasion this season.

“The first impression in this club is really important, to maintain the level is really important and difficult,” said Amorim who was asked about Manchester United fans comparing Lammens to legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. “He is not Schmeichel. He is a young guy, he showed a lot of composure and the fans like him. He needs to show himself.”

This season has been a challenging one for Manchester United so far. Amorim appeared to be on the brink after suffering a humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, but his team has built some momentum over the past few weeks. Indeed, United has won three of its last three league games against Chelsea, Sunderland and Liverpool.

Bryan Mbeumo has hit the ground running after joining from Brentford in the summer transfer window. Matheus Cunha also caught the eye at Anfield on Sunday while Benjamin Sesko has scored two goals in just four Premier League starts. Manchester United has clearly improved its forward line since last season.

In Lammens, though, Amorim has someone to build a solid foundation on top of. The Belgian will make a mistake at some point because all goalkeepers do, but he appears to have the fundamental basics and mentality to be successful at Old Trafford. Manchester United is counting on him to flourish.
