Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has cautioned crypto users to remain alert as hackers exploit the rise of Meme coins to carry out scams. CZ noted that attackers are targeting social media accounts with weak security, using them to share fake contract addresses (CA) that lure users into phishing traps.
The warning followed an incident where hackers compromised the X account of BNB Chain. The account, which has nearly four million followers, was used to publish false airdrop campaigns and Meme coin promotions. These posts contained phishing links that acted as legitimate wallet connection prompts through Wallet Connect, tricking users into exposing their crypto credentials.

According to blockchain security firm SlowMist, the attackers used a fake domain that resembled BNB Chain’s original site, altering only one character in the web address. Researcher 23pds from SlowMist identified that the system behind the fake page was connected to the notorious Inferno Drainer group, known for wallet-draining schemes and phishing template sales since 2022.
Binance Team Intervenes After Account Compromise
CZ confirmed through his personal X account that Binance’s internal security team contacted X to suspend the compromised account and put in takedown requests for the phishing domains. “The BNBCHAIN account is compromised.
The hacker posted links to phishing websites. Do NOT connect your wallet,” Zhao wrote. He reiterated his standard SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) warning, reminding users to remain cautious even when messages appear from verified or official sources.
Growing Trend of Crypto Account Breaches
The BNB Chain incident adds to a growing list of social media breaches targeting the crypto sector in 2025. In February, the account of Pump.fun was misused to promote a fake governance token, while a WIRED journalist’s profile was used to push a Meme coin scam.
