Kevin Durant Agrees To Terms On Extension With Rockets

In a move that had been highly anticipated for months, Kevin Durant agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets. The deal will keep Durant with Houston through the 2027-2028 season; it includes a player option for the 2027-2028 season, giving him some degree of flexibility to test free agency waters. The maximum amount Durant could have commanded was $120 million over two years. The deal represented a significant discount which will allow the team the financial flexibility to retain its young core as it continues the final phase of the franchise’s rebuild.

When asked earlier in the summer about whether he would sign an extension, Durant expressed optimism stating that while he didn’t know exactly when it would happen, he did see himself signing an extension eventually and envisioned a long-term future with the Rockets. He did not view the trade as a one-year destination. Durant has spoken openly about utilizing his leverage from his contract status to navigate trade discussions with the Phoenix Suns, steering himself towards Houston, a team he deemed as a contender.

Durant now holds the record for the highest career earnings in NBA history. His total career earnings from NBA salaries alone are projected at $598.2 million, surpassing LeBron James’ previous record of $583.9 million. The figure does not include endorsements.

During the 2024-2025 season, Durant appeared in 62 games and averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, shooting 52.7% from the floor and 43% from long distance. The Rockets hope he can have a similar impact this season. Durant is 37.

Durant projects to start alongside fifth year center Alperen Sengun and fourth year forward Jabari Smith Jr. on Houston’s frontline. Sengun was signed to an extension last summer while Smith was signed earlier this summer. Houston’s long term foundation is coming into focus with the barrage of commitments. The Rockets next hope to retain fourth year forward Tari Eason. The deadline to do so is Monday, per the rules of the league’s collective bargaining agreement. The discount provided by Durant makes an agreement with Eason far likelier, given the added financial flexibility. Houston views Eason as an essential member of its young core.

Emerging star Amen Thompson becomes eligible for an extension next summer. It is expected that given his trajectory, he would command the full maximum allowed under the rules.
