‘Boston Blue’ Continues The Tradition Of Family Established In ‘Blue Bloods’

“Taking on this venture of reprising Danny Reagan and carrying on the traditions set forth in ‘Blue Bloods,’ into a new world, was a daunting task, but it became something that I couldn’t even dream of.”

This is Donnie Wahlberg talking about his new series Boston Blue.

The drama, slated to air on Friday nights like its predecessor, follows Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Regan as he takes on a new role within the Boston police department, where he partners with Detective Lena Silver, a member of a storied, multi-generational law enforcement family.

In addition to Wahlberg, the series stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Detective Lena Silver. Maggie Lawson as Police Superintendent Sarah Silver. Marcus Scribner as rookie cop, Jonah Silver. Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan. Gloria Reubin as Boston District Attorney Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. Wahlberg is also an executive producer on the series.

About the personal trials that Danny faces in moving to Boston, Wahlberg says, “He knows New York so well, and you know who’s who, what’s what, the way someone walks and talks, what they’re about. [Danny could] just identify people, and he doesn’t have that [in Boston]. He has to lean on [Detective Silver] and really trust her in a way that he’s not used to. He quickly learns he doesn’t really want to drive in the streets of Boston, but, he usually drives the car, and he doesn’t know how to navigate these streets.”

Of his new partnership with Silver, Martin-Green explains, “We really wanted to showcase and bring to life, that they sort of see themselves in each other. And we thought that’s something that we haven’t really seen a lot in partnerships, especially in budding partnerships in the beginning, and we thought, what a lovely thing to have these people immediately connect [and] have them immediately trust each other, immediately respect each other.”

But, she adds, “Of course, there is going to be conflict, and there are going to be challenges that they have to face, in their partnership and outside of it.”

Some of those obstacles will feature discourse between Danny and his son Sean, who is also in law enforcement.

Family plays a large role in the Boston Blue narrative with good reason, says Wahlberg. “I can tell you, from 14 years on Blue Bloods. I’ve met thousands of law enforcement families, who’ve said how much it means to see families like theirs represented on TV. Having the chance to continue telling the story of a new law enforcement family it’s a tremendous honor, and hopefully it lands with all of those law enforcement families the same way Blue Bloods did.”

He adds, “The Reagan family always had each other’s back in New York, there was always another Reagan there to have their six, and to be there for them, and we [see] that Sean’s discovering what it means to be a Reagan, finally joining law enforcement, finally putting service ahead of self, but Danny is also learning that his son doesn’t have another Reagan on the job, and that’s never happened in the history of the family.”

And that’s why Danny relocated to Boston, explains Wahlberg, ‘to further the father-son bond.’

“Now Danny and Sean are there growing together and learning the city together, and it’s really a wonderful chance to grow these characters in a new world with rich characters around them, and becoming part of their life, becoming their new family.”

Will any of the characters from Blue Bloods turn up on Boston Blue? Sonnier pauses a moment and then responds with, “Let us just we are a continuation of the Blue Bloods universe, which truly means that we live in the same universe. We want to see where that goes, so that is something that we will be exploring.”

Margolis furthers the thought with, “You know, the cities, Boston and New York, are only a 3-hour drive [apart], so it’s well within reason that folks from the city could make an appearance from time to time, and that’s something we were having fun playing with.”

Martin-Green sums up her thoughts about Boston Blue with, “I just want to say we’re taking this legacy that Blue Bloods built, and we’re going to fly with it. We invite you to come and eat dinner with us, come solve these crimes with us, cry and laugh with us, because we owe it to you, we owe it to those law enforcement families around the country and the world. We are very excited to be connected with you, to be expanding this franchise, and we’re gonna be doing it with love and light and fun. So yeah, we got a seat waiting for you.

‘Boston Blue’ premieres Friday, October 17th at 10pm on CBS and is available for streaming on Paramount+.
