BNB Chain Account Hacked to Promote Memecoin Scam

Chaos erupted in the BNB ecosystem after hackers managed to seize control of the chain’s official X account, using it to promote a meme coin and a series of fake airdrop giveaways.

The posts, dressed up to look legitimate, attempted to lure users into connecting their wallets to malicious sites.

The breach was first flagged by Binance’s Chinese team, who confirmed the handle had been compromised and urged the community to ignore any links being shared. The fraudulent promotions even included a meme token that featured Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, adding another twist given his recent comments about meme coins having “utility.”

The attackers filled the compromised account with multiple posts advertising rewards and free distributions. Anyone clicking through was directed to phishing portals designed to drain connected wallets. The timing has rattled many in the community, especially as BNB Chain has been expanding into areas like real-world asset tokenization and gaining wider adoption.

CZ Steps In With SAFU Warning

Changpeng Zhao quickly addressed the incident from his personal account, urging users to steer clear of the links. He explained that the posts were part of a WalletConnect scam and stressed the importance of checking domains carefully, even when they appear on official pages. Binance’s security team has since engaged X to freeze the account, remove malicious domains, and restore control.

His warning came shortly after he had been rallying the community around “Uptober,” a traditionally bullish month for crypto markets. Despite the breach, BNB’s price held relatively steady, dipping just under 2% to $1,010 while still clinging to the $1,000 support zone.

Why It Matters

High-profile account takeovers remain a recurring threat across crypto, and this episode reinforces how even official channels can be weaponized to spread scams. For investors, the message is clear: double-check links, trust only verified sources, and never connect wallets through suspicious prompts.
