Jaylen Brown recently started his own Twitch stream. It’s a chance for fans to get to know him better and connect with the Boston Celtics star as he showcases more of his personality.
At media day at the Auerbach Center on Monday, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP said that it is something he has kept sheltered. Now, he is ready to come out of that shell and show the world who he really is.
“A lot of times, I’ve felt like I had to operate a certain way to protect myself, and it was the way that I feel like I had to be in order not to lose my mind a little bit,” shared Brown. “But I feel like I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I’m at peace, and I feel like I can express more of myself to the world in a sense where I just haven’t opened up at all over the last five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten years.
“So, just starting that journey. I started maybe a year ago. Doing some different things, designing, expressing myself more creatively, but more so showing the world who Jaylen Brown really is.”
With his 29th birthday less than a month away and his 30s on the horizon, this new phase he’s entering represents an individual who is comfortable with who he is and how people respond to that. That’s not an easy place to reach when you’re in the spotlight.
“I felt like in the past, the outside voices, I would be lying if I said they didn’t motivate me because they did,” expressed the four-time All-Star. “At this phase of my life, I’m not sure if I gain motivation from that.”
Now, Brown seems centered, calmer, and more at peace. While that can help him on the basketball court, that’s secondary.
Being the Celtics’ top option isn’t Jaylen Brown’s primary focus
The former All-NBA selection acknowledged that everyone on the team will have to take on more responsibility, as Jayson Tatum is rehabbing a torn Achilles, and Boston’s roster is undergoing a summer makeover. However, he’s less focused on what it means to be the team’s top option.
Brown noted that it can change within a game or from one contest to the next. He also pointed out that there are No. 1 defensive options, but they receive less attention because the focus skews towards the offensive side of the ball.
What the six-foot-six wing is more focused on is preserving the Celtics’ identity and core philosophies.
“I think the Celtic way that we’ve been able to establish is unselfishness, versatility, being able to empower our guys to step up and feel comfortable enough that they can just be themselves. Also, setting the tone on defense,” voiced Jaylen Brown from the podium. “Making sure that we continue to maintain our effort on that. And just playing hard. Playing hard. Playing unselfish[ly]. Playing fast. I feel like that’s the identity that we’re going to build.”
