Survivor is back for its 49th season, with a new group of castaways competing for the $1 million prize and a chance to join the show’s landmark 50th season this spring. With the two-hour premiere now streaming, here’s everything you need to know about watching Survivor Season 49.
CBS’s long-running reality series follows 18 contestants (known as castaways) who are intentionally stranded on an island in Fiji. Divided into three tribes, they must outwit and outplay each other while adapting to their surroundings and forming a new society. Only one castaway can be crowned the title of Sole Survivor and win the $1 million prize after 26 days of intense gameplay.
Returning for Season 49 is legendary host Jeff Probst, who has presided over all seasons and serves as executive producer of the hit survival series. In a recent interview with TVLine, he teased that this was one of the “hottest” seasons of the show, which greatly impacted game play at the beginning. The show films in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.
“The front half of the game is pretty exhausting, and it’s pretty rough for a few of the players. It’s not an easy go. And then the merge hits and the weather starts to cool and the game goes bonkers,” he revealed. “The players are now back and it’s one of the most unpredictable back halves of a season that we’ve ever had. Suddenly, you get a little bit of energy and a little bit of a cloud cover, and all the big guns come out.”
In May, Kyle Fraser was crowned the winner of Survivor Season 48 after a 5-2-1 jury vote. The 31-year-old attorney from Brooklyn, NY, kept his profession a secret from the other players throughout the game. During his pitch, Kyle claimed he was the most well-rounded player because he built strong connections throughout the season and balanced relationships on all sides.
