Ethereum’s Fusaka Upgrade: Vitalik Buterin Reveals PeerDAS to Solve Data Availability and Boost L2 Scaling

COINOTAG News, September 25th — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on social media the Fusaka upgrade is designed to address current data availability constraints while keeping security paramount. The upgrade’s central innovation, PeerDAS, proposes that nodes request only small randomized data blocks, creating a probabilistic availability model in which over 50% of blocks are accessible without any single node retaining the full dataset.

Under this design, nodes can use erasure coding to reconstruct missing fragments when a majority of blocks are retrievable; nonetheless, initial workflows still require complete block retention during the broadcast and certain reconstruction phases. Core developers emphasize a conservative, test-driven rollout of increased block counts to safeguard the protocol’s security posture and to facilitate measured progress toward enhanced L2 scaling and eventual L1-level use cases.
