Alien Earth’s first season has ended, and the important bit of that is “first” season. What seemed like it might have been a miniseries was in fact meant to have multiple seasons, and now we have some news about that from the creator himself.
Creator Noah Hawley has this to say to Polygon about the cliffhanger, relatively low-key finale, and how he wasn’t all that worried about a second season of Alien: Earth:
“A big part of what I try to do as a visual storyteller is always to engage the audience’s imagination,” Hawley said. “Too much of what we watch treats us as passive viewers. So if the worst thing that happens is that the audience has to finish this story, I trust them to come up with some good ways to go forward.”
I’m not sure audiences would agree with that, as they would rather watch…a finished story. But ultimately, Hawley is confident a second season will happen:
“I’m pretty confident, given the show’s success, that we’ll get to make more.”
This aligns with previous reports about the prospect of Alien: Earth season 2, as Hawley was talking about this even before the finale. Here he is speaking to Evolution of Horror:
“I do. I do. I mean, I think that I have a destination in mind story-wise, which allows me to know what the story is I’m telling, what it means. And I don’t know how long it takes to get there, but I do have a sense of where we go in success. And you know, the question becomes: how streamlined can we make the process so that you’re not waiting for three, or four, or five years for more?”
Then, if we’re moving past Hawley himself, this was FX boss John Landgraf way back in 2024, well before the show even aired:
“We’re pretty bullish on Alien: Earth and we’ve told him that assuming, as we hope, Alien: Earth is a returning television series, we want him to focus on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of Fargo.”
Well, FX was right to be bullish, as Alien: Earth has created viral discourse, has been well-watched and with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, it is the single highest Alien entry in the history of the series, above Aliens’ 94% and Alien’s 93% (albeit those had much higher audience scores). This is the only TV show that exists in that universe.
Season 2 of Alien: Earth was not announced before the finale, or immediately after, but it seems like a lock that this will happen in the end. The main question is when season 2 may get here, and if we’re in “standard” modern-day streaming territory, that’s probably 1.5-2 years, unfortunately.
