Summer has fallen. Fall has risen. It’s still quite lovely out, but you can definitely tell the season is changing. We were at the store the other day and at the end of all the Halloween decorations, a lonely Christmas endcap was already on full display. I love Christmas, but it’s too soon. Much too soon! Black Friday sales will probably start in October this year.
In the meantime, we have puzzles to solve. In particular, today’s Wordle. Let’s dive right in . . . .

How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
GUILE was an interesting opening word. I’ve never used it before and I’m not sure why it popped into my head, but it ended up being a mildly decent but not great starter. I had 124 words left and a lonely yellow U. STUCK was an okay second guess. I wish I’d guessed SOUTH but in the moment I was having trouble coming up with decent words so I ran with STUCK instead. (You could say I was quite literally stuck). 16 words remained and since my mind’s been on Halloween, HAUNT seemed a natural choice. That only slashed my remaining solutions down to five, so my fourth guess—MOUTH—was very lucky, indeed.
Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. The Bot gets 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating me, slipping just a bit further ahead for the month of September:
Erik: 15 points
Wordle Bot: 20 points
How To Play Competitive Wordle

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word mouth comes from Old English mūþ, meaning the opening of the face, from Proto-Germanic munþaz. It is related to Old Saxon mūth, Old High German mund, Old Norse munnr, and Gothic munþs. All of these trace back to Proto-Indo-European *men-/*mnt- meaning “to project, to protrude,” which also gave words like Latin mentum (“chin”).
