Today’s Wordle #1550 Hints And Answer For Tuesday, September 16th

I continue to hit the gym hard these days, partly to get in shape and lose weight and partly to manage stress and anxiety, which I’ve noticed have increased a great deal over the past couple of weeks. I get sucked into the news and then I have a bit of a mental spiral. Grim tidings lately. People are on edge. Too many people are acting like idiots or calling for violence. The world needs less violence and more puzzle games. I swear, if everyone just paid more attention to Wordle and read more books and got more exercise, we’d be a happier lot. The trick, of course, is finding meaning in our lives. When people feel disenfranchised, when life seems meaningless, it’s easy to let the bad thoughts take over.

We, dearest Wordlers, will do our best to avoid that. Let’s solve this Wordle!

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

I felt rather good about my third guess today. My opener, SCORE, was pretty lousy, leaving me with 322 remaining possible solutions and a single yellow ‘E’. ADIEU, which many people still use for their opening salvos, only cut that number to 30 and I still only had the single yellow ‘E’. When I came up with my list of possible guesses, LEFTY was one of them. I thought it would be ironic, with all the talk of the “radical left” these days, if that was the Wordle. I love me some irony. I was basically compelled to guess it, and lo and behold LEFTY was the Wordle. But my “huzzah” turned to ash in my mouth when I saw the Wordle Bot’s score.

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and lose it immediately because the Bot beat me today. The Bot gets 2 points for guessing in just 2 tries and another for beating me. I didn’t lose any points, but the Bot’s lead widens once again. Our September totals are now:

Erik: 9 points

Wordle Bot: 18 points

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word lefty is a colloquial formation from left + the diminutive/agentive suffix -y. It first appeared in American English in the late 1800s as slang for someone who is left-handed, later broadening to mean someone with left-wing political views (by the early 20th century). The suffix -y here is the same as in words like doggy or smarty, used to form nicknames or informal descriptors.
