Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson’s The Naked Gun,” a reboot of the Leslie Nielsen comedy classic, is reportedly coming soon to Paramount+ and MGM+.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth McFarlane, The Naked Gun opened in theaters on Aug. 1 before debuting on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Sept. 2.
The logline for the new Naked Gun movie reads, “Only one man has the particular set of skills … to lead Police Squad and save the world! Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in The Naked Gun.”
Nielsen, of course, played Frank Drebin Sr. in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988, The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult in 1993. The film series began as the ABC sitcom Police Squad! in 1982.
Anderson stars in the new version of The Naked Gun as Beth Davenport, a socialite who joins Frank in his investigation of the billionaire tech mogul Richard Caine (Danny Huston), following the mysterious death of Beth’s tech genius brother. The Naked Gun also stars Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy and Eddie Yu.
The Naked Gun is expected to debut on streaming video on demand on Paramount+ and MGM+ on Tuesday, Sept. 30, on both Paramount+ and MGM+, according to When to Stream.
While When to Stream is typically accurate with its SVOD and PVOD reports, the streaming tracker noted that The Naked Gun’s studio, Paramount Pictures, has not announced or confirmed the SVOD release date and it is subject to change.
For viewers who don’t subscribe to Paramount+ or MGM+, Paramount+ offers two subscription tiers. The ad-based Paramount+ Essential tier costs $7.99 per month, while the ad-free Paramount+ Premium tier is $12.99 per month.
MGM+, meanwhile, is an ad-free subscription service that costs $6.99 per month or $4.92 per month if you enroll in a yearlong subscription.
Liam Neeson Was Initially Apprehensive About Starring In ‘The Naked Gun’
In an interview with Variety before the release of The Naked Gun in theaters, Liam Neeson said Seth McFarlane — whom he worked with as a director and co-star on the 2014 Western spoof A Million Ways to Die in the West — reached out about three and a half years ago to gauge his interest in starring in the new version of the Leslie Nielsen classic.
Neeson, however, said he initially had “a couple of apprehensions” about the idea of doing a full-blown comedy role, but those apprehensions “didn’t last long.”
“The comedic stuff I’d done [was] just TV skits, a couple of minutes long. But a movie – the co-lead in a movie for 90 minutes was a bit of a tall order,” Neeson told Variety. “But I did know that if push came to shove and we did it, the script would be at least be good if Seth was involved because he’s got a wicked sense of humor. If it’s at the very least good, I shouldn’t try to be funny. Just be serious. I knew there’d be lots of sight gags.”
Rated PG-13, The Naked Gun is reportedly set to debut on streaming video on demand on Paramount+ and MGM+ on Sept. 30.
