Brad Garlinghouse, the head of Ripple, has been promoting a new XRP-branded rewards card on X.
The product, rolled out in partnership with Gemini, promises users up to 4% cash back on purchases. Despite the fanfare, reactions within the XRP community have been muted, with many arguing the card doesn’t deliver anything groundbreaking.
Lukewarm Reception From XRP Holders
The card’s limited availability — restricted only to U.S. customers — has sparked frustration among international supporters. Others note that Gemini has already been offering XRP as part of its standard rewards program, making the card feel more like a rebrand than an innovation. While marketed as a major release, many long-time holders say it fell short of the expectations set by Ripple and Gemini’s hype.
Attempts to Build Excitement
To counter the slow start, Ripple executives have leaned into promotion. Garlinghouse proudly displayed his card online, while Ripple CTO David Schwartz joined the effort by posting photos of himself with the card, complete with XRP-themed apparel and even a visit to “XRPresso.” Gemini’s Tyler Winklevoss joked that Garlinghouse had been given “the whale limit” on his card, adding that the Ripple CEO could handle it.
Gemini Strengthens Partnership With Ripple
Despite criticism, the launch underscores the deepening relationship between Ripple and Gemini. In recent months, the exchange has added new XRP integrations, including collateral support for derivatives trading and expanded access to Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin. Reports also surfaced that Ripple extended a credit line to Gemini ahead of the exchange’s planned IPO, highlighting closer financial ties between the two companies.
The Bigger Picture
For Ripple, the XRP card is part of a broader push to showcase the utility of its token beyond cross-border payments. But with mixed feedback from its most loyal community members, it remains to be seen whether the product can gain traction or if it will simply serve as another symbolic step in Ripple and Gemini’s growing partnership.
