‘Superman’ Is Now Streaming—How To Watch The DCU Superhero Film At Home

James Gunn’s blockbuster DC Universe film Superman is already streaming on digital video-on-demand platforms after premiering in theaters in mid-July. Keep reading to learn how to watch the superhero movie at home for your next movie night.

Directed and written by Gunn, Superman marks the first installment from the newly revamped DCU. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent (aka Superman), alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced.

“When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good,” per the official synopsis. “Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?”

Superman has achieved something many of its recent DCEU predecessors couldn’t in recent years: critical acclaim. The film holds a solid 83% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while moviegoers rated it even higher, awarding an impressive 91% audience score based on more than 25,000 reviews.

NPR film critic Glen Weldon praised the “surge of joy” feeling that you get several times while watching movie, writing, “It makes you want to cheer. That’s it, that’s the secret ingredient that’s been missing from so many superhero stories for so long.”

At the box office, Superman crossed the $500 million milestone, with $333 million in domestic and $249 million in international sales contributing to the half-billion total, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s also the highest-grossing DC Comics film since 2022’s The Batman, which grossed $772 million worldwide.

Some fans were confused by the movie’s quick at-home release, especially given its ongoing theatrical success. In an interview with ScreenRant, Gunn revealed that the earlier digital release was due to Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on Thursday, August 21, on HBO Max.

“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker,” he explained. “I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that ‘Peacemaker’ is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see ‘Superman’ that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”
