The United States government has quietly amassed one of the largest crypto portfolios in the world, currently valued at around $24.29 billion.
The lion’s share of this reserve is in Bitcoin, with 198,022 BTC worth approximately $23.44 billion, according to recent blockchain data.
While Bitcoin dominates the holdings, the portfolio is far from one-dimensional. It also includes stablecoins, Ethereum, and a mix of major altcoins. Tether (USDT) accounts for $347.45 million, followed by 59,951 ETH valued at $273.6 million.
Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) makes up $88.81 million, Binance Coin (BNB) stands at $33.93 million, and other notable assets include Wrapped Ethereum, Binance USD, USD Coin, Dai, and smaller amounts of tokens like Tron, Uniswap, Chainlink, and Shiba Inu.
This crypto stockpile has largely been acquired through legal seizures rather than open-market purchases. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed in a recent Fox Business interview that the government has no intention of buying Bitcoin to expand its reserves, despite speculation earlier this year.
He emphasized that the “strategic Bitcoin reserve,” established under President Donald Trump in March, will only grow through asset confiscations tied to enforcement actions.
For months, the idea of direct government Bitcoin purchases had stirred bullish sentiment among traders, who viewed it as a potential vote of confidence in the asset and a factor that could tighten supply. Bessent’s latest remarks, however, suggest that any near-term expansion of federal crypto holdings will be limited to coins seized through legal processes, not market buys.
