Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is offering free global access to its newest model, Grok 4, on X. The news has thrilled millions of users who now get to experience Musk’s latest AI model at no cost.
According to xAI, Grok 4 is open to all users with its free tier. New features in this model include an “Auto” mode for difficult queries and an “Expert” mode for those who would rather activate it themselves.
While this service has traditionally been limited to certain users or territories, opening Grok 4 to a global audience means that anyone on X can now reap the benefits of its capabilities.
Elon Musk says the Grok model free version will allow a few queries per day
Earlier, access for non-subscribers was capped at five daily requests under a tiered system, and subscribers had to pay $30 per month to gain unrestricted access to the platform. xAI is now providing free access to its AI model, describing the move as part of its mission to expand the availability of advanced AI.
Musk posted on X, “Grok 4 is now free for all users. The free tier allows a small number of queries per day. Beyond that requires subscription.”
The move closely follows the release of Grok Imagine, an image and video generation tool previously exclusive to subscribers. Grok Imagine thus simplifies the entry level for novices in this ecosystem of xAI by making it available free anywhere on iOS and Android. The service transforms natural language prompts into visual media like videos and images.
xAI previously wrote that the model’s availability would be limited, but did not provide details on when it would withdraw the offer. This lack of a definitive roadmap lends itself to a speculative rollout rather than any built-in analyst forecasts. This time-limited access window might indicate a more significant departure from the path to monetization in favor of longer-term user retention to reintroduce subscription fees eventually.
Users have asked for revisions to the model’s tiers
Some users on X have asked the platform to update its pricing or offerings for premium users now that it’s allowing free use. One user commented that they would like a higher-tier option beyond the free version, explaining that heavy demand sometimes overwhelms the AI, causing generated images to appear as a green screen. Another user inquires why Premium Plus members are still being billed $40 a month for Grok.
Some supporters of the Grok model were pleased with xAI’s decision, claiming that the company is offering “perfection for free” and calling the AI model a real game changer. One user even asked Musk when they would release the next version, possibly named Grok 5.
In July, xAI secured a contract worth nearly $200 million with the US Department of Defense to create and implement artificial intelligence solutions. At that time, the United States Department of Defense, working with the General Services Administration, issued similar $200 million–cap contracts to other prominent US AI companies like Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
Before the contract announcement, Grok was facing backlash for publishing responses that promoted Nazi ideology and rape fantasies. However, the company later said it had resolved the problem and apologized to those affected.
