Ethereum developers have recently achieved a remarkable milestone with Layer 2 projects on the Ethereum network. In response to the new development, Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined the near-term expectations for these projects.

In a recent post shared to X, Vitalik Buterin laid out his expectations for Ethereum Layer 2 projects, most of which have already made significant progress in recent times.

“Amazing to see so many major L2s now at stage 1,” Buterin wrote, and further added that optimization for a quicker withdrawal time for under 1-hour transactions enabled by validity through Zero Knowledge proof systems should be the next goal, one that he prioritizes over L2 projects advancing to Stage 2.

Buterin further emphasized the importance of increasing withdrawal speed, noting that users often have to wait for a week to process transactions, which then leads to an increase in the cost of capital for instances where liquidity providers are unreachable.

“If we can reduce native withdrawal times to under 1h short term, and 12s medium term, then we can further cement the Ethereum L1 as the default place to issue assets, and the economic center of the Ethereum ecosystem.” He wrote.

Buterin’s solution is to refer to ethproofs.org to track the progress of ZK-EVM proofs. He referenced his proposal made earlier this year, in which he suggested a 2-of-3 ZK + OP + TEE proof system strategy that bridges the gap between security, speed, and maturity.

The Ethereum founder expressed optimism in the possibility that users opt to do the  ZK + ZK + OP tiebreak, or ZK + ZK + security council tiebreak.

With the aforementioned proof system in place, Buterin foresees the gas cost of submitting proofs on-chain as the only barrier against fast settlement.

“This is why short term I say once per hour: if you try to submit a 500k+ gas ZK proof (or a 5m gas STARK) much more often, it adds a high additional cost.” He added.

Buterin’s long-term solution for low settlement fees centers on aggregation; replacing N rollups with a single proof that proves the validity of the N proofs, and submitting once per slot, which then enables the near-instant native cross-L2 asset movement through the Layer 1 network.
