Coinbase’s Base Chain Restarts After Sudden Outage

Coinbase-backed Layer 2 blockchain Base briefly went offline early Tuesday, halting block production and disrupting essential network functions such as deposits and withdrawals.

The downtime, which began around 1:15 a.m., was acknowledged on the project’s status page, with a fix implemented roughly 30 minutes later. Engineers say they are now closely monitoring the system.

No technical explanation for the outage was provided, though it comes during a period of rapid expansion for the Base network.

Activity has surged in recent weeks, following the relaunch of the Base App, which integrated creator-focused platforms like Zora and Farcaster. That move kickstarted a decentralized social economy, driving demand across the chain.

The boom is evident in token creation. In July alone, daily token launches skyrocketed from under 7,000 at the start of the month to nearly 50,000 by the end—highlighting growing developer and user interest.

Despite the hiccup, Base continues to gain momentum in the Layer 2 space, positioning itself as a key hub for on-chain social, creative, and financial activity.
