Victims of soggy bread, skimpy meat, and lackluster toppings or condiments can agree – a great sandwich is so much better than a mediocre one. Sandwich aficionados really know that a sandwich is so much more than two pieces of bread with some stuff in between. And with gourmet sandwiches trending perhaps more than ever – French dips, gourmet grilled cheese, fancy club sandwiches – celebrating National Sandwich Month in August feels very appropriate.

To help American sandwich lovers enjoy the festivities, Yelp has curated a list of top sandwich shops around the country, according to reviewers’ feedback. Data analysts at the user sourced review company identified businesses in the sandwich category on Yelp, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews.

“A few of the top trends we’re seeing soar in the handheld-loving community include gourmet, house-made sandwich accoutrements like aiolis, chutneys, and more. Yelp users are also really digging unique toppings from pickled vegetables to olive tapenade,” said Tara Lewis, Yelp’s Trend Expert and VP of Consumer Expansion, “One of the highest praises we’ve seen amongst Yelp reviews, and arguably the most crucial ingredient of any sandwich is the bread, and Yelpers are gravitating towards artisanal breads like fresh ciabatta, garlic bread, or pretzel buns. Other trends from this year’s list include vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free offerings for health-conscious diners, and the top Yelp-favorite French-influenced Vietnamese sandwich, Banh mi.”
